So without further ado, here it is:
"We have run a lot of data cables through the house in the
hope that we’ll never need to add any more, as with a 2 storey home it is
almost impossible to fix cables or add new ones. All cabling will terminate
under the stairs except for the HDMI extenders and the speaker cables – these
originate in the media room.
We are installing a combination of Cat6 data cabling, RG6
for Foxtel and Free To Air (FTA), speaker cables and HDMI extenders. The HDMI
extenders use a wall plate at each end and are joined by 2 x Cat6 cables to
provide 4K HDMI and also provide infrared pass-through, so remotes work through
the points. They are also powered, so I’m hoping they keep the signal alive as
advertised…
Many thanks to my friend Karl who has done the bulk of the work and turned my ideas into actual cables running through the walls.

What Goes Where?
Under The Stairs
Almost everything starts here…
We have a 9RU rack to mount on
the wall, and our measurements place it so the bottom of the rack is the height
of the top of the door to get under there. Now that the stairs are in I’m
scared that it won’t fit, so that should be a fun thing to check…
The NBN pre-cabling goes here so
we have a spare power point, and a conduit with a pull cable for when NBN rolls
around
The first phone point in the
house is in here
All the data points terminate in
the rack, and at some point I hope to win an auction for a 24 or 48 port rack
mount 1Gb switch
All the FTA and Foxtel cabling
terminates here, and we’ve run 3 x RG6 into the ceiling cavity which can reach
wherever the antenna / satellite dish goes

The Wish List
Once we are in and settled I’d like to get some more bits
for various rooms, starting with a TV for the wall facing the kitchen. Later
on, adding a surround sound system, speakers and projector to the media room,
outside speakers to the alfresco area and then TVs for the living room, TV room
and garage. This may be a looooong term plan J

* This is a very costly unit so we may have to settle for a
lesser one
I have no idea on speakers, projector screen or a definite
projector yet so any ideas will be appreciated."
Thanks Mick!
Thanks Mick!
Wow you guys! Well done. Now you're 'future' proofed' as Daniel likes to call it. I'll make him read your post later, I'm sure it will all make much more sense to him.
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurenb! Let me know what Daniel thinks :)
DeleteAsh.
Hi Ash,
ReplyDeleteOur home theatre was going to be a very long term fitout for us to... until, we went to H.Norman, got some great deals and prices along with 2 years interest free - no repayments. This means this year when we move in we don't need to worry about making any payments and can pay it off over the remaining 12 months.
We got the Epson EH-TW6000 SD projector, Jamo ceiling speakers, Pioneer VSX-LX 55 AMP/receiver (with 5 years warranty at no additional cost).
There are some great deals to be had and if you have 2 years to pay without fixed instalments, it frees your cash (as long as you can pay it off as you don't want the interest at the end).
We were also going to get the 110" motorised screen but recently realised it would't fit in our bulkhead as the canister across the top is quite a bit wider than the screen therefore meant we needed to get a 90" screen. We decided to change to the Tauris fixed 100 fixed frame screen, which I now prefer as it looks like a proper cinema screen.
Good luck when your time comes for choosing, but do look around and you will really be able to get a bargain. I have even searched the net and some of our prices are less than what I can find online, so I think we were lucky and did ok.
Thanks Lilac. Harvey Norman can be a great spot if you can manage a good deal from them. We're pretty happy with our carpet deal we got through them but you're right, you must be ready to negotiate! I think we will look at this option when the time comes.
DeleteAppreciate the help :)
Ash.
It all sounds fantastic. Hope you get a lot of use out of everything.
ReplyDeleteMrB did a full on complete c-bus system in our house, with internet, electric curtains, data, telephone, foxtel etc points in every single room.... It all sounds great, except we only use our telephone connection for internet, and don't leave the phone plugged in as everyone calls us on our mobiles... the only calls we receive on our landland are UNWANTED. Uggh. so we just unplugged it.
Oh, and we are are too tight to get foxtel LOL. But like you said at least we are future proofed so when we one day have kids we could always get it for them... if they deserve it that is.
B
Too funny B! Foxtel can be a great entertainer for kids, so I'm all for it if it keeps them quiet for a while haha! But I think there's a lot available on DVD now, you prob don't need Foxtel.
DeleteNot sure on the landline at this stage. We put them in for the internet and alarm. Not sure we'll hook a phone up...probably will, just cos we're old fashioned lol.
Wish we could have installed the C-Bus system. It looks great! So handy :)
